The Florida Keys are a chain of tropical islands stretching approximately 120 miles off the southern tip of the state of Florida. Lying between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, this is truly a tropical paradise worth visiting. The Keys are well known as a fantastic destination for fishing, scuba diving, boating, and snorkeling. Key West, the southernmost city and probably most well-known city in the Keys, is famous for Duval Street’s numerous vibrant bars, Mallory Square’s nightly Sunset Celebration, and for the book, lovers, the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum.

With so much to do and even more to see, a Florida Keys camping trip is one vacation you’re bound to enjoy – and keep coming back for. And when it comes to camping, one of the best campgrounds in Florida is the Bahia Honda State Park. You just have to make it one of your destinations when you visit the Florida Keys.

Bahia Honda State Park – Truly One of a Kind

Bahia Honda State Park is one of the very few national parks in the world that can boast of an award-winning beach as part of their attractions. This beautiful park covers over 500 acres of land and an offshore island and offers some of the best experiences any park can offer. Activities such as snorkeling, beachcombing in Florida, nature walks, swimming, and of course enjoying the wildlife on land and in the sea are bound to keep you entertained throughout your stay here. There is never a dull moment in this colorful and vibrant tropical paradise.

Bahia Honda Bridge – A Legacy of Resilience

The story of Bahia Honda can never be complete without telling the story of the iconic Bridge that represents turning tragedy into triumph.

Henry Flagler’s Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway arrived on Bahia Honda Island in 1908. It was the most difficult of the 43 bridges to construct due to the swift water channels the island is named after. The railroad was finally opened in 1912 after a lot of determined hard work and sacrifice on the part of the workers. But this victory was short-lived as category 5 hurricanes called the Labor Day hurricane destroyed the railroad in 1935. Instead of repairing the railroad, the remains were converted into what is now known as the Overseas Bridge. Tragedy was turned into triumph, and the Bahia Honda National Park continues to thrive and flourish – every time.

Bahia Honda – Hope, Inspiration, and a Whole Lot of Fun

Perhaps, because of its dramatic history, this should be your destination of choice whenever you’re faced with challenges or feel like giving up in life. A Key West camping trip might just be the source of the hope and inspiration you may need to pull you through.

Besides that though, a camping trip on the Bahia Honda State Park campgrounds is an exhilarating experience the whole family is bound to enjoy. The beautiful cabins mounted on stilts offer a different experience accommodation wise while the perfect waves provide amazing surfing opportunities. For those who prefer to have their feet on solid ground, rollerblading or wildlife viewing will still keep you entertained. In fact, Bahia Honda has numerous water-based and land-based activities for everyone to enjoy – so many you may not be able to go through them all.

Bahia Honda Reloaded

Because Bahia Honda suffered extensive damage from hurricane Irma, a lot of restoration is going on to restore it, not just to its former glory, but beyond. Many areas that had been closed off are now open and a lot of the activities are now back on track.

This is one place that can’t be kept down, hurricane or not. With strong communities that work together to keep this tropical paradise the piece of heaven it is intended to be, Bahia Honda will always be a place of hope, inspiration, and unparalleled adventure. If you’ve never been to this tropical paradise, get your camping gear ready and set your feet towards Florida’s Key West.
